Shopping for a Laundry Set (Washer and Dryer)
Considerations to keep in mind when buying a washer and dryer
- Family needs: smaller loads (possibly more frequently), larger loads (less frequently or mixed loads); the king-size comforter should still be taken to the laundromat
- Lifestyle: convenience; unique features; available utilities
- Environmental concerns: water and energy usage
- EnergyGuide labels: learn what they mean and how they apply to you
- Costs: energy efficient and water efficient models; maintenance and repairs over the life of a machine; compare prices with an eye to water and energy use
- Nearest authorized service company: We recommend Glacier Appliance, and Salter and Newell.
- Warranties: one year is standard on most appliances; compare details such as coverage; compare extended warranties, if desired
- Read reviews from several sources
- Available space: measure the actual space, and doors and hallways to allow clearance for installation
- Location: Energy-efficient front-load washers spin at much higher rates of speed than other (and older) models, so they will have a somewhat higher (usually momentary) vibration; however, the vibration is vertical, and is transmitted to the floor. On a solid ground-level floor (basement, garage) this will not be noticeable; if the laundry area is on an upper level, ideally it will have a load-bearing wall underneath the floor to give the same dampening effect. An upper-level laundry area without support will vibrate; if you cannot provide the support needed, there are some options for reducing the vibration:
- Ensure the washer is installed properly on -any- floor: remove shipping bolts and braces as per instructions; level the washer. (If our delivery staff installs any laundry unit, this will be done. For free.)
- Forego the pedestals, as they make the vibration worse
- Increase the rigidity of the floor with cement pads (such as used under central air conditioning condensors) or additional layering of heavy plywood
- Install vibration isolators, such as rubber horse/cow mats or specialty pads (www.vibrationsolution.com, Silent Feet, www.bgreeninnovations.com, etc.)
The new energy-efficient models require the new HE laundry detergents; these are formulated specifically for the new machines. The old style of laundry detergent has a greater likelihood of damaging your new washer due to its high-suds formula.
Front-loading washing machines are extremely well-sealed. After you have finished laundry for the day, leave the door ajar to permit excess moisture to evaporate; this will prevent development of a musty odor.
After purchase:
- Read the instruction book, including use and care
- Record the model and serial numbers in the book and on the receipt; keep in a safe place
- Keep appliances clean as recommended by the manufacturer; replace filters as recommended
Expected appliance lifespan in years (industry averages):
- Dishwasher: 13
- Clothes washer: 14
- Clothes dryer: 18
- Freezer: 21
- Range: 18
- Refrigerator: 17
